In July 2009 the European Commission initiated a wide-ranging public consultation on the legal framework for the fundamental right to protection of personal data. The stated objective is to obtain views on the new challenges for personal data protection in order to maintain an effective and comprehensive legal framework to protect individual’s personal data within the EU. The consultation closes on 31 December 2009.

Following extensive consultation with key stakeholders, including 31 associations in 25 countries, efamro and ESOMAR submitted a joint response to the Commission's consultation on 17 December 2009.
UPDATED: Following the targeted private stakeholder's consultation meeting on the future of personal data protection on 1 July 2010, efamro and ESOMAR have submitted a further detailed response to the Commission to key questions discussed at the meeting.
